Forza Motrice
This book was published to coincide with the exhibition of the same title, curated by Marco Delogu and Fabio Sargentini, held at the Officine Centrali Trambus in Rome on occasion of the 56th Congresso/Esposizione Mondiale del Trasporto Pubblico in 2005.
Five painters and five photographers of two different generations were chosen to reflect upon the contemporary situation and to document the city through trams and buses.
Objects or figures drawn from real life can be identified in the paintings by Stefano Di Stasio, Paolo Del Giudice, Claudio Palmieri, Mauro Di Silvestre and Luca Padroni. However, these objects or figures have been greatly manipulated using various pictorial techniques and compositional choices, to the extent that none of the images can actually be said to represent reality.
The photographs by Don McCullin, Olivo Barbieri, Marco Delogu, Petra Feriancovà and Raphael Dallaporta, on the other hand, present contrasting urban visions ranging from the horizontal to the vertical, from the specific to the universal and from reality to its parody.
It is a documentary challenge between painting and photography, and between the ability to interpret reality and its re-elaboration.
