PhC 2012: Collecting Landscapes

The fourth edition of Capalbiofotografia is dedicated to the tradition of landscape photography in collecting, with particular attention to the American school , the Italian school and the tenth edition of Rome Commission.

The fourth edition of Capalbiofotografia is dedicated to the tradition of landscape photography in collecting, with particular attention to the American school (Joel Sternfeld, William Eggleston, Tim Davis and Alec Soth), the Italian school (Luigi Ghirri and Olivo Barbieri) and the tenth edition of Rome Commission, the only city in the world that commissions the greatest names in international photography to portray it in complete creative freedom (this collective exhibition includes pictures by Martin Parr, Guy Tillim, Olivo Barbieri and Tim Davis).

The 24 photographs on display in the main collective exhibition that opens the Festival are from both Italian and foreign private and public collections; some of them are among the best-known production of the individual artists, while others (as in the case of Don McCullin’s Ravello) are new and have never been shown before. They all belong to the increasingly popular category of photographic collecting in which so-called “landscape photography” plays a central role.

As a derivation of the American topographical school, the main collective exhibition is flanked by a group of works on the Italian landscape, with a selection of artists (Cesare Fabbri, Fabio Barile, Federico Covre, Francesco Neri e Michele Cera) curated by Documentary Platform, a visual archive of the materials of the various courses of investigation that the young generation of photographers has been directing in recent years at Italy and its society.

The festival ends with a solo exhibition dedicated to Lorenzo Maccotta’s recent work on Orune, made for the second edition of Meno Trentuno, a highly successful photographic exhibition curated by Salvatore Ligios and produced by Su Palatu. By featuring this work we wish to draw attention to the relationship between Capalbio and Orune, and in particular the migrations of entire families from the Sardinian town to the Maremma region.

Inauguration at 7 pm on Saturday 7 April, Associazione Il Frantoio, Capalbio.
Festival Producer: Maria Concetta Monaci, Art Director: Marco Delogu.
2012 edition curated by Marco Delogu and Alessandro Dandini de Sylva.
