PhC 2014 – The Game

The Jousting Knight is a problem of logical-mathematical that requires the competitor to try to complete an ideal path on a chessboard using only one piece of the knight who, with his typical movement “L”, will have to go on every setback only once. Georges Perec, brilliant writer and member along with Queneau and Calvino Oulipo (group of writers who sought to create works using, among others, the techniques of writing bound) was amused to articulate and reconstruct a complex narrative using this constraint. In his “life, instructions for use” the stories of the many tenants of a building French retraces moving between apartments and the stairs, just like a knight in a hypothetical board.

The same approach has given life to this exhibition. In theaters, many photographic works so different, many photographers as different from each other, have been reassembled imagining a narrative that would link each photo to the next subject leveraging shared similarities aesthetic, conceptual adhesions.
The last two pieces of the board from 64 provide the link to the second chapter, a chessboard smaller, but entirely dedicated to linger on the equestrian tradition, so rooted in the Maremma. Among the photographs probably gonna see also exposed photographic books: they are also considered here as an art form and as an important means of spreading and deepening.

Moving in this path will not always be a simple challenge. Some links will become clearer, others will require more effort. Perhaps the visitor, being at the center of the salt, circondado by so many works, he will feel a bit ‘as Perceval Bartlebooth (protagonist of the book and whose name is reminiscent of another famous character, the Scrivener Melville) and its puzzles, pledged to construct, deconstruct, reconstruct and finally dissolve an image. But we are sure that eventually you will succeed to put the last piece, whatever form he has.

PhC 2014 – The Game
